Mental maps are simply maps hand drawn from memory. They are 2D unless the cartographer is super talented and thus there is no depth. Some can be detailed but those are few and far between. Mental maps were used in in prehistoric times to convey where food, water, or shelter might be. Cave painting such as those in Southern France are examples of mental maps. The map above shows the route from the person's house to the bus stop, work, airport, office, etc. It is 2D and not extremely detailed.
