Public Land Survey System (PLSS) maps are surveys used by the U.S. to mark parcels of land, boundaries, and townships. The East-West lines are called townships and the North-South lines called Ranges. Each map is 36 square mile as each square represents a square mile and it is divided in intervals of 6 miles. This map is the PLSS of Franklin County, Alabama. and is represented in a 3mile by 6 mile township.
